40. Joseph Wallwork was born in 1796 in Hurst. 1871 census shows "age 74" He was baptized on 11 Sep 1796. In 1843 he was an overlooker, Hurst. He appeared in the census on 2 Apr 1871 in 87 Mossley Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs..²⁹ He died on 8 Dec 1874 in Mossley Road, Hurst.¹ He was buried on 11 Dec 1874 in St John the Evangelist, Hurst.¹ There was a graveyard at St John the Evangelist, Kings Road, Hurst that was removed (date uncertain) No record was kept of the graves before removal. Ray W spoke with the vicar, who said any records would be at Manchester; No records at Manchester, they also checked with Stalybridge, who have no records of the graves. He was orphaned at 8 yrs old, then was one of 50 people who went with John Whittaker from Oldham to Ashton-under-Lyne in 1806 to start a cotton spinning and weaving mill at Hurst.

Joseph Wallwork and Mary Loftus were married on 3 Feb 1818 in St Michael, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancs.. Mary Loftus (daughter of John Loftus and Sally) was born in 1797. She was baptized on 14 Jan 1798 in St Mary's Oldham.¹ She died in May 1865.¹ (not shown on 1871 census) She was buried on 11 May 1865 in St John the Evangelist, Hurst.¹ Lofthus? Lofthouse?
